Loffler, Jesse. "A Swift Proposition". Last Update: May08. Online Text Version.
Summary: Fully titled "A Swift Proposition: for a quickly implemented solution for preventing the children of single-parent families and unwed mothers from being a burden to their parents or country and for making them beneficial to the public good," Jesse Loffler updates the classic Jonathan Swift satire for the contemporary audience.
Prompted by a study exploring the cost of unwed and divorced child-bearing in the United States of America, Loffler's take on Swift's masterpiece lampoons the authors of the study and their evangelical funders.
Loffler explains, "I read an AP article on Scafidi's study and it just sounded so familiar to something I'd read before. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it but abruptly realized that the reporting on the study and the study itself were even more humorous than I originally thought. Both the AP article and the Executive Summary of the study read like the first page of Swift's 'A Modest Proposal.'"
